Kids and Teens

Our Library Service offers a variety of services and programs for infants, children and young people. The library is the perfect place to support the development of early literacy skills.

School Holiday Activities

We hold school holiday activities for primary aged children, as well as afterschool activities throughout the year. For more information on what's on in the school holidays and afterschool check the Events section of the website.

Leapfrog Easy Readers

The Library has a special collection of books for young people learning to read. To make it easier to pick a book at the right level the books are colour coded:

  • Green books - for beginner readers. This level includes books that are for parents to share with their children to engage them in reading, as well as simple texts that early readers can attempt to read themselves.
  • Yellow books - for developing readers. These stories have an increase in sentence length and vocabulary.
  • Blue books - for confident readers. These books are for children who are starting to read on their own, but may still require assistance.
  • Red books - for newly independent readers. They generally have short chapters, multiple stories and engage the reader with more complex plots.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Library supports the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge by stocking many of the titles on the list. Library staff can assist students to locate books to read.

The Premier's Reading Challenge is available for all NSW students in years K to 9. The Challenge aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge website has information and advice such as book lists, rules, FAQs and online registration.

Summer Reading Club

Each year the Crookwell and Gunning Libraries conduct the Summer Reading Club from 1st December - 31st January. The Summer Reading Club is for preschoolers, primary and secondary students. Participation in the Summer Reading Club is FREE!

The Summer Reading Club encourages children and young people to discover great authors and illustrators and encourages a love of reading during the holidays.

Participants in the program receive a themed activity pack with stickers, bookmarks, a reading log and an age appropriate activity booklet.

To register for the Summer Reading Club visit the Crookwell or Gunning Library in early December to fill in the registration form and pick up your activity pack.
